Majhighariani Institute of Technology & Science (MITS) was started in the year 1999 under the patronage of Basantadevi Charitable Trust. The MITS was conceived in response to the acute deficiency in centers of higher learning (Technical) in the country as also, the need to develop relevant human capital to meet the technology and management challenges of 21st Century. In today's context in the state of Orissa, the brand 'MITS' immediately brings to one's mind as one of the few institute that produces class of young achievers in enterprise, information technology & industry.

Recognition of MITS initiatives in the state has given it the impetus to modernize itself, expand the existing and explore newer frontiers of knowledge for the benefit of the society. In the process, MITS has been continuously evolving itself & strengthening its roots. To the society to which it owes its existence, its concerns have always been to provide opportunities, especially to the underprivileged, physically challenged, disabled, and economically weak.

Recognizing that those challenges will transcend the traditional boundaries between disciplines and nations, MITS encourages education that is distinctively interdisciplinary and international. MITS grew commensurately with time. Having started with a mere three discipline of engineering at B.TECH level, it now has Electronics & Telecommunication (E &TC), Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), Information Technology (IT), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE), Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Bio-Technology (BT). Now it offers M.TECH, M.SC & BCA courses also.

MITS holds the pride of place being the first ever-technological institution in Orissa to get awarded by Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhawana Award-2004 for imparting Best Technical Education in Orissa. Now, MITS has developed into a reputed Engineering Institution with ISO 9001: 2008 Certification. The college is affiliated to Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), Odisha & Berhampur University and also approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi.
